What this tool calculates
This profit-margin calculator separates gross profit, operating profit and net profit using four inputs for one reporting period. Gross profit subtracts cost of goods sold. Operating profit also subtracts operating expenses. Net profit additionally subtracts the other expenses you enter.
How to use profit margin calculator
- Choose one period, such as a month, and gather revenue and costs for that period.
- Enter COGS, operating expenses and other expenses in separate categories without counting an expense twice.
- Calculate profit amounts and their percentages of revenue. Compare periods only when the accounting basis is consistent.
How the calculation works
Gross = revenue − COGS; operating = gross − operating costs; net = operating − other costs. Each margin = profit ÷ revenue × 100.
Worked example
Revenue ₹10,000, COGS ₹4,000, operating costs ₹2,000 and other costs ₹500 gives ₹6,000 gross and ₹3,500 net profit.
Understanding the result
The labels describe this simplified calculation. Your accounting treatment may group expenses differently. A positive gross profit does not guarantee a positive net profit. Revenue of zero leaves percentage margins undefined even when costs are present.
