What this tool calculates
Simple ROI compares net gain with the initial investment. Simple payback divides the initial investment by a constant net return per period. These two measures answer different questions: one expresses a percentage gain, while the other expresses a duration under a steady-return assumption.
How to use roi and payback calculator
- Enter initial investment, total returns for your chosen horizon and other costs for that horizon.
- Enter a net return per period using one consistent time unit, such as a month.
- Calculate net gain, simple ROI and payback in those entered periods. Record the horizon and period unit beside the result.
How the calculation works
Net gain = total returns − investment − other costs. ROI = net gain ÷ investment × 100. Payback = investment ÷ positive net return per period.
Worked example
₹1,00,000 investment and ₹1,30,000 returns with no other costs gives ₹30,000 net gain and 30% simple ROI.
Understanding the result
This model does not discount cash flows, model changing returns or assess investment risk. Do not count the initial investment again in other costs. Zero investment leaves ROI undefined, and zero periodic return cannot produce a finite payback estimate.
