How do you pay a restaurant bill with a QR code in India?
Check the restaurant name, items, amount and any separately listed charge before paying. A QR code may identify a merchant or payment destination, but it does not confirm the bill is correct. If the amount differs from the bill or the app shows an unexpected payee, pause and ask staff to clarify. Use the scan feature in your UPI or bank application and inspect the payee and amount before authorizing. Some codes may not prefill the amount, so check any digits you enter yourself. The screens vary by app and payment setup; rely on the information shown by your payment provider.
Authorize only inside the payment app
Enter your UPI PIN only in the official payment-app authorization flow. Do not share the PIN or an OTP with restaurant staff, and do not enter banking credentials into a menu website. NPCI’s UPI materials explain PIN authorization as part of making a payment; it is not needed simply to receive money.
If the app identifies a person or business you do not recognize, cancel and verify with staff. Do not rely only on a logo printed next to a QR image. The payee displayed by the app is a key check before confirming a transaction.
Check the result before trying again
Wait for the app’s result. A successful transaction screen or reference comes from your payment app; a photo of the QR code is not proof of payment. If status is pending, ask the restaurant to check its records before paying again. A second attempt can create a duplicate debit.
Keep the transaction reference and bill until the merchant confirms receipt. If money was debited but the restaurant cannot see it, use the bank or app’s official dispute route. Resolution depends on provider and status; do not assume every pending payment reverses immediately.
Request the invoice separately
Payment confirmation and a tax invoice are different records. Ask for the receipt or invoice for the restaurant sale. Required fields and GST treatment depend on the supplier and transaction; consult current GST sources or an accountant for a compliance determination. UPI payment does not itself establish the tax treatment.
If a payment QR is presented as the only way to receive an invoice, ask how the restaurant issues the document. Keep the invoice associated with the correct bill. This is a user-flow explainer, not banking, tax or dispute advice.
Additional operational check
If the merchant uses a dynamic amount or a bill-linked QR, still inspect the amount and payee that the app displays before authorization. A convenience feature does not remove the need to check. If the transaction is marked successful but staff cannot match it, show only the transaction reference needed to investigate and avoid sharing your PIN, OTP or full bank credentials.
