How do you share a restaurant menu on WhatsApp?
Copy the public guest-facing menu link, open the intended WhatsApp conversation, paste the link and check the preview before sending. A shareable menu should open without restaurant-owner login and should make sense on a phone. If the link is a QR code image or a PDF, explain what the recipient will see and make sure the file or page is accessible to them.
WhatsApp’s official Click to Chat help page documents `https://wa.me/<number>` links for starting a chat with an active WhatsApp account without saving the number. It says to use the full international-format phone number without plus signs, zeroes, brackets or dashes. A restaurant can therefore provide a WhatsApp contact link for questions, but a menu link and a WhatsApp chat link serve different purposes: the first opens the menu; the second opens a conversation.
Prepare a stable menu URL
Use the public page that guests are intended to view, not an editor, preview or staff dashboard URL. Test it in a private browser window and on a phone using mobile data or the venue’s guest Wi-Fi. Confirm it loads without a sign-in wall and that prices, availability and branch details are current. If sharing a PDF, check that the recipient can open it in a mobile browser and that the file has not been moved or permission-restricted.
Prefer a short, readable link owned or controlled by the restaurant. If the menu is served through an external platform, note whether that destination changes when the restaurant updates its account or plan. A WhatsApp message cannot make an expired redirect or deleted PDF available again. Keep a record of the source address that QR codes and messages use.
Share in an existing chat or create a click-to-chat link
In an existing customer conversation, paste the menu URL and add a short, factual line identifying the restaurant, branch or service type. Do not imply that the link places an order unless it actually opens an ordering flow. If the guest needs to book or ask a question, give the correct contact path separately.
For a public WhatsApp contact link, follow WhatsApp’s published `wa.me` format and encode any prefilled message as a URL query string. Test the final link on a phone that is not logged into the restaurant’s account and on WhatsApp Web where relevant. Ensure the number belongs to the business and that the team can respond. Do not put sensitive customer details in a link that might be forwarded.
Keep links accurate when the menu changes
If the menu URL is stable, the restaurant can replace or update the destination page while continuing to share the same address. If a new menu has a different URL, update saved replies, QR assets, business profiles and any templates that contain the old link. Ask staff to use one approved text snippet, but include branch-specific context when needed. Remove expired offer language instead of reusing a message after its dates have passed.
The WhatsApp Help Center explains how Click to Chat opens a chat; it does not certify a restaurant’s menu, establish consent for marketing, or guarantee that a recipient will view a link. Follow current WhatsApp product terms and the restaurant’s own consent/privacy requirements for outbound messages.
Test the message and destination
Before sharing to a customer group, send the link to a staff member or test number. Open it without an owner login and confirm the preview, restaurant name, menu and branch are correct. WhatsApp click-to-chat uses a link that opens a conversation with a specified phone number; it is different from a menu URL. Keep the menu address as the main destination and add a contact action separately if guests need to ask a question.
Use a short message that identifies the venue and what the link opens. Avoid sending a tracking or shortened address unless the restaurant can verify its destination and understands what it records. If the menu changes, keep the address stable where possible and test again. On printed materials, the QR code should resolve to the same guest-facing page. Do not assume a shared message remains current after prices, availability or branch details change; maintain one approved link for staff to reuse.
